MONTANA.

She awoke to find herself laid out on a stretcher in the Meet Market lobby. She rolled to one side, landing on her feet, then dashed towards the elevator, ignoring the cries of the Meds chasing after her. She threw herself into the elevator and hit the button for level 106. The doors slid shut before the Meds could reach her. She slumped into a corner as the elevator rose and she watched the men disappear beneath her.

Anderson timed her breathing, slowing her heart rate, fighting the sickening feeling of panic as she reviewed the situation. Justice Department PR would not allow a Judge to be implicated in tonight’s events. Van Doren would be forced to tell the press this was the work of yet another futise who had slipped the net. Unable to tell their subscribers the truth, Meet Market would be discredited even further, and would have to shed hundreds of employees as the company took another step towards complete collapse. All thanks to a failed gamble on Anderson’s part. She thumped the back of her head against the window. Stupid, stupid, stupid rookie.

Minutes later the elevator dinged to a halt. She limped back through the pleasure suites and into the Rave Hall. The music had been shut off and the lights were up. Montana was still cuffed to the bar-rail, fighting a pair of Med Judges. He punched one of them across the dancefloor, while the other grabbed Montana’s arm and tried to wrestle him into submission. Clearly, it would take more than a catnap to clear the overload of poison from Montana’s mind. Anderson identified herself and ran over.

“We’ve shot him with two rounds of suppressant,” the Med said, as he fought to restrain Montana, who bucked and snarled like a crazy refusing to return to his kook-cube. Anderson caught his face with both hands. His mind writhed with visions of violence so ecstatically obscene she had to stop herself from letting go. She could feel the force of his hatred creeping into her own mind. Eros must have hit him with twice as much as he had given her, and, if Montana’s frenzy continued, his heart would give out long before his mind. He spat in her face, cursed her, threatened her, craned his neck and snapped at her wrists.

Anderson held his face and screamed, unleashing a torrent of psi-energy into his fevered mind. She imagined a tidal wave sweeping across a fire, plunging into every crevice of Montana’s being, quenching his tormented mind and washing away every impurity. She could feel him beneath the cleansing flood, sinking beneath it. She was drowning him. She released him and saw his eyes roll back as he slid from her grasp and into the arms of the Med Judge. The one Montana had laid out on the floor caught Anderson as she stumbled back.

“What the drokk happened here, Anderson?”

Nothing much. Only risked the lives of thousands of people, caused a PR disaster that will cost the jobs of a thousand more.
